Features of Synthpop music videos (FOSMV) and the artist Kavinsky

Born Vincent Pierre Claude Belorgey on July 31 1975, Kavinsky is a French house (European dance/disco music) artist whose musical style is very similar to the electropop soundtracks of films from the 1980s. Kavinsky has claimed that his music is mostly inspired by many films that he watched as a child and that he has picked the best parts from them and then merged them into one concept. Kavinsky has been compared to many similar French house artists that include Daft Punk and Danger. One of his most noted pieces was "Nightcall" that achieved major mainstream recognition after being featured in the 2011 film 'Drive'. Kavinsky's music videos include "Odd Look" and "Protovision". Apart from Kavinsky, similar artists include: Caravan Palace and Daft Punk

For my music video, I am using the song "Nightcall" by Kavinsky. This song is the genre of Synthpop. When creating my music video, I need to ensure that I keep to the conventions of the Synthpop genre and consider how they are similar or different to more general features of music videos that I have looked at. I will look at a number of Synthpop music videos and then will compare them against more general music video conventions and also will decide which of these elements will be in my final project.

I will be looking at the following music videos that are the genre of Synthpop and have an 80s style to them:
Odd Look by Kavinsky
Protovision by Kavinsky
Lone Digger by Caravan Palace
Harder Better Faster by Daft Punk

I will also be looking at these more 'modern' music videos that are the genre of Synthpop:
Habits (Stay High) by Tove Lo
Royals by Lorde

I will research these music videos in the following areas to find conventions of Synthpop music videos:
Narative
Tone
Lyrics
Editing Techniques
Use of Digital Effects
Costume
Hair
Make-up
Mise en Scene
Shot Types
Audience
Performance Space
Sound
