Music videos often range between 3-5 minutes in length and often star famous artists and/or their music. It should be noted that the main reason for the creation of music videos is for commercial purposes that are often created to promote a song by an artist. However, certain music videos are created with an agenda or more personal reason related to the artist where the artist often wants to send a message to their audiences. This may however act as a secondary purpose for the creation of a music video.
Music videos range from many different genres that include:
- Classical and art music traditions. European classical music. Opera.
- Electronic. Ambient. Electronica. Techno.
- Folk. Traditional.
- Popular. Blues. Country. Hip hop. Jazz. Pop. Reggae. R&B. Rock. Alternative. Metal. Punk.
- Progressive.
- Psychedelic
There are a wide range of different music videos that exist. Even the same artist may use different features in their various projects. However, there are similarities and some general trends in music videos that I will recognise as well as using my research from Andrew Goodwin's features of music videos for inspiration.
I will cover:
Shot types used and the connotations of them
Editing techniques
Costume
Hair/ make up
Performance space
Narrative
Mise en Scene
Sound
Audience
Use of digital effects
Tone of song and video
